A guide to hiking in the Lake District

By David Felix | on Oct 5, 2012 | 0 Comment
UK

There are some places in the UK that are just perfect for hiking, one of them being the Lake District. This part of the world is a hotspot for holidaymakers from all over the world who seek adventure as well as peace and quiet, but above everything else, hiking is the main attraction. Being a mountainous area with spectacular views throughout, it’s no surprise that people like to go hiking here, whatever the time of year. However, when going on lake district holidays, what should you bring, and where are the best places to go hiking?

Staying safe

It’s important to stay safe while hiking, no matter how experienced you may be. To do so, you need the right equipment, so hiking boots, waterproof clothing, a protective helmet, a change of clothes and a harness for any climbing would all be essential things to pack. On top of that, you’ll need a mobile phone in case there’s an emergency situation, and remember to bring food and water for when you first start hiking to boost your hydration and energy levels.

Where to hike?

As for the actual hiking, there are so many great places where you can walk, with dozens of designated routes providing breath-taking views, steep hills and villages and towns along the way where you can grab something to eat while catching your breath. There is nothing quite like getting active on a uk holiday. A walk around one of the many lakes such as Windermere, Grasmere or Ullswater will make for a fantastic route, but if you want to see several of them during one trip, then you could maybe try the famous Coast-to-Coast route made famous by Alfred Wainwright.

You start from either the westernmost point of Cumbria and finish near Whitby, taking in several parts of the Lake District in the process.
