Madrid – A City Steeped In History

Do you ever dream of just dropping everything and flying over to somewhere like Madrid in Spain for a nice city break away from the stresses and strains of your day to day life? That’s exactly what you have the chance of doing if you watch the video below and enter the competition.

Why Madrid in particular? Madrid is not only a very cultured city, but it is also a very old and historic city with a rich heritage. The thing that attracts me to Madrid is the fact that the earliest records show that the city existed in some shape or form during 865 AD. The records state that Emir Muhammad I ordered the building of a fortress in a village called Mayrit. Mayrit was the name the Arabs used to describe Madrid back then and this is where King Phillip II of Spain eventually established his royal court.

Although there are not many remnants of earlier Madrid, there are a few if you keep your eyes peeled and look in the right places. Madrid feels to me like a city you can get lost in and if I won this competition I know I would enjoy really getting lot and walking round the old buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries, the remains of the Hapsburg Dynasty.
I would also want to check out the Malasana district. For those that don’t know, the Malasana district is a very important area where the movida madrilena was established. This was an underground movement that during the 1980’s was the driving force that changed Madrid’s personality and image.

The thing that has always impressed me about Madrid though is the fact that despite it being a very majestic and serene city; it is also a very busy one. I have a feeling it would be hard to be bored in Madrid. There is just so much to see and do.

As a big fan of food, if I won the competition I would love to try out various seafood dishes, but ultimately there is one food and one food alone that I would be most interested in and that’s churros. Churros are the Spanish version of donuts and anyone I know who has tried them as said they are divine and in a different class from ordinary, run of the mill donuts that you get elsewhere.

Even if I wasn’t as interested in the history of the city as I am, there would still be plenty of other things to do. If you entered the Madrid competition and won it for instance you would have the opportunity to experience an experience truly unique to Madrid – authentic flamenco dancing at a Tablao.
